Improvement in health care has led to longevity. Advanced age is associated with a high prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia. Progressive loss of intellectual ability, emergence of behavioural and psychological disturbances, and loss of functional independence has great impact on the people afflicted with the disorder, as well as imposing tremendous challenge to their family members and the community.
Advances in basic science, clinical and interventional research brought much understanding about the pathological mechanisms in late onset cognitive disorders. Exponential rise in the geriatric population projects that the Chinese community will be facing an upsurge in the dementia population in the next few decades. It is pertinent to improve community knowledge through better understanding of the pathological factors and intervention strategies. Enhancing the coverage of research areas with improvement in professional and community literacy in this area will be the key to success.
